An Insight in to Farm Life

For all of you budding potential farmers out there, we’re speaking to you. Because for all that you might think farm life is, there’s a lot about it that you just might not know about. But for some reason, the idea of owning and running a farm is one that’s becoming much more appealing to a lot of people. There’s money to be made in it, and it’s a lifelong self sustaining career that will always be like a cash cow. Granted, it is hard to set up, maintain, and to deal with when things do start going wrong, but for the most part, owning a farm is always going to be a good idea. But, before you start to do anything, you need to have a bit of an insight in to farm like. It’s not always going to be what you might think, which is why we’re here to talk to you today. Here are some of the highs and lows that you might have to face.

Shortages

Shortages will come in many forms it would seem on the farm. One of the biggest ones that you’ll have to deal with in one particular season, is a shortage of water. For a farm that grows crops, this can be devastating. But, when the hot months come, there’s generally not much you can do about it. However, one thing you can do is have a look at poly water tanks. They fill with water during the wetter seasons, and are large enough to store enough water to cover some shortages that you might go with. We really do think it’s essential that all farms have one of these! Another shortage you might have would be a shortage in livestock. If you would like a farm with that it is. If you do, it’s hard to come by quality livestock, for a good price. You’ll generally find that you’ll want more thoroughbreads to produce good quality stock on your own farm, but boy do these come with a price, and they are so few and far between. Our best advice would be to attend plenty of auctions until you find the right once for you!

Supply & Demand Issues

It’s easy to come by this. Some people assume that if you’re growing the produce, or rearing the animals, that people will want to buy it. Wrong, there are already farms and farmers out there producing items that people know and trust, so getting your foot in the door is not always as easy as it seems. However, one thing you can do is go to farmers markets and sell small to begin with! It games your name on the wall, and you’ll soon notice that you’ll only build up and up from there!

The Life Of A Grafter

This is a harsh reality that you’re more than likely going to have to come to terms with sooner rather than later. The life of a farmer is one that will always be grafting. It’s a very hands on job, and there aren’t many days where you won’t have to do something. Something will always need to fixing, or tending to, and you’ll soon realize that you’re more busy than you ever would have been in any other job!
