Youth organizations, homeschool groups, and children of all ages are invited to join us for a free event at Better Farm as we plant young saplings on the property here, courtesy of New York State’s School Seedling Program.
Planting and caring for tree seedlings can help young people learn about ecosystems and the valuable role that trees play. Through this educational program, schools and youth organizations are eligible to receive free trees or shrubs from the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery, along with guidance on how to plant and care for them. Planting and tending these trees with young people offers a hands-on way to understand natural systems, observe their environment, and learn key vocabulary.
When students plant tree seedlings they can discover the structure and function of trees while building their awareness about conservation.
As the trees mature, they can serve as an ongoing living laboratory for young people to learn from. The experience can help students make informed decisions about the conservation and use of natural resources.
Trees planted by the School Seedling Program count toward New York State’s goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033.
We’ll be recording the trees we plant via “25 Million Tree Initiative Tree Tracker.”
Register by emailing info@betterfarm.org. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own shovels and garden gloves; we have ample wheelbarrows, carts, compost, and dirt on-site for planting.
